Notes / Ruby Debugging Tools

Pry is my favorite debugging tool for Ruby. With Rails, I use the pry-byebug gem to effectively debug my code.

The pry-rails gem provides an easy way to have pry console when running rails c.

I use this in my pryrc to get byebug style aliases:

if defined?(PryByebug)
  Pry.commands.alias_command 'c', 'continue'
  Pry.commands.alias_command 's', 'step'
  Pry.commands.alias_command 'n', 'next'
  Pry.commands.alias_command 'f', 'finish'

  # Hit Enter to repeat last command
Pry::Commands.command /^$/, "repeat last command" do
    _pry_.run_command Pry.history.to_a.last
  end
end
